US Distric Courtroom Renovation

Newark, NJ

DCM performed architectural, mechanical, electrical, and fire-protection design-build services for the renovation of the US District Courtroom, located on the Federal Square in Newark, NJ. The goal of the design was to mirror an adjacent courtroom in the Martin Luther King building and US Courthouse. The existing courthouse had been vacant for nearly 6 months, and had previously often been passed over by incoming justices due to its outdated design and features. DCM also led the process of refinishing existing millwork, including the judge’s bench, spectator seating, witness box, and deputy seating, as well as the demolition of the original pyramid ceiling to accommodate a new light cove and flat ceiling panel. DCM also oversaw the demolition of two witness rooms to accommodate three additional rows of spectator seating.
